2025 Fall Season Updates

2/6/2025 at 1:46pm:

Hello Swim/Dive Fam! We are now starting some prep for the fall season with some exciting things in the works!

First thing on the docket is selecting captains. The process and expectations for this are laid out here.

Emails have gone out to Juniors with this information already. Please take a look at the document if you are interested in the process and ALL athletes should keep an eye on their email for a link to vote for captains and share their input between March 3rd and 5th. The voting link will also be posted to the website. :-)

Looking forward to a great fall again with the literal best team a coach could ask for!

Don't forget: SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION ON WEDNESDAY, FEB 12th at 6pm. Check your email for information on where to enter!

Jennie King
Girls Assistant Swim Coach

jennie.king@mercerislandschools.org

Jennie is an 1988 graduate of Mercer Island High School and a 1993 graduate of the University of Washington. At Mercer Island, she was part of the first team to win a state championship; and was voted team captain and most valuable by her peers. She swam all 4 years in college, specializing in 200/400 IM and mid-distance freestyle.  While swimming and coaching were her passion, she went on to work for Merrill Lynch in Financial Services for 18 years in a variety of leadership and coaching roles.

Once able, she returned to coaching first as a football coach for her sons, and then finally to the pool in 2019 as Mercer Island's Boys Head Swim and Dive Coach. In her first year as Head Coach, she led the boys their first State Title in six years, followed by an additional one in 2021. In 2021, she was thrilled to join the girls team as an Assistant and has been proud to help lead the girls to back to back state championships in 2022 and 2023.

Jennie is a Fashion Stylist, helping her clients look and feel their best, and loves bringing her fun fits to the pool.  She just launched her youngest son Griffin, who will play college football at Claremont McKenna, and her oldest Addison is studying Aerospace Engineering at CU Boulder. Having a full team of girls will help with the “empty nest” feeling.  Jennie spends her free time watching her son play football, devouring fashion, working out, and watching Seattle sports. She is really looking forward to spending more time with her husband Jason with the boys in college.

Way to go, DISTRICT CHAMPS! Nice job today, team. Great work from the first event all the way through the last event. Alexa McDevitt earned the District gold cap for two individual events wins today (200 and 500 Free). Really proud of each of you and all the great swims that were put together!

I also want to congratulate the 200 Medley Relay for breaking the school record during today's meet! Clare Watson, Gracyn Kehoe, Tatum Enge and Hope Enge broke the previous record by a full second. Nice job!

Practice for those participating at state will be on Monday from 2pm-4pm. The state psych sheet will come out tomorrow and we will have a better idea on if we were able to secure any wildcard spots into events. I will post the full state meet lineup tomorrow evening. If you anticipate swimming at the state meet and are able to get to a pool tomorrow to swim more after the past two days of racing, please do.

One weekend to go. Let's keep pressing.

Great prelims session today for our swimmers! Congrats to Emma Nowakowski (100 Fly, 100 Breast) and Emily Dunn (500 Free) for picking up state qualifying times today. Across the board, we were nearly perfect on season best times during the meet today and LOTS of lifetime bests. I am continually impressed by this group.

For Saturday Finals, please be there by 4:15pm for when doors open. Last week, we learned that getting to Mary Wayte at facility opening will make it tough for us to find our preferred space. Warmup will end at 5:40pm and we will have our pre-meet team meeting at that time. Be sure you are prepared for swimming right then.

All event finalists (top 6) will recieve awards tomorrow. This includes Diving, Clare! ;-) Meet will start promptly at 5:45pm.

Congrats to every on today's performances. Here are tomorrow's swims:

SENIORS: Please complete this form by Wednesday, if possible - https://forms.gle/7rVK5Uu3uq18cq6e8 If you complete it on Thursday, you just won't get to pick your events.

Great work again today against Redmond! Results to the meet will be posted on Monday, but nice job getting the win today, team! Congrats to Meg Dahlin for snagging her first state time of the season today in the 200 free. Also congrats to Tatum Enge (200 free) and Clare Watson (500 Free) for adding to their state time tallies. Gold cap today went to Riya Alagugurusamy for a great meet.

Last week of the regular season is upon us! Two more meets with chances to grab some post-season marks. Proud of what we looked like this week at practices and in our racing. Stay healthy, Islanders.

Redmond Meet: Entries for tomorrow's meet AT Redmond now posted! Out of class at 1:30pm and bus leaving at 1:40pm. 7:07pm UPDATE: The diving board at Redmond is not in working condition. There will be NO DIVING at tomorrow's meet.

Kingco INVITE added! For those athletes who need an extra opportunity to make a Kingco qualifying time, we will have a meet next week on Friday at Mary Wayte. Warmup for that meet will be 3pm-3:45pm and the meet will conclude by 5:30pm. This meet is for any of our athletes who do not have two Kingco qualifying times!

End of Season is Approaching....I cannot stress enough the importance of paying attention to where you are on the depth chart. I wll likely have our entire post-season lineup done while we wrap up the season next week. The only few questions that I will have lingering will be ones that I look to answer during Kingco and I won't compare taper times to non-taper times. So if you are looking to make the district/state team this season (remember - those are the same thing essentially), don't wait to ask those questions. Monday and Wednesday next week I will be asking athletes what they want to swim at Kingco; please be prepared to answer. :-)

Bellevue Results Posted: Another great win for us last night against Bellevue. Really proud of the full team effort and the energy we brought on the pool deck. Way to go, Islanders!

Clare Watson picked up new state cuts in the 100 Back and the 100 Free; Clare earned the gold cap for the meet. Tatum Enge (200 IM) picked up a new state cut as well. Also, punching a ticket to state in the 500 yesterday - CJ Woare! Lots of season best times and great races. I am really proud of the way we looked as a team yesterday.

End of Season Prep: Back to the grind today! An updated top times report will go up over the weekend AND a top times by name report. This will show you what events you have completed this season and if you are still looking to hit some time standards for post season meets, there are still three more dual meets to get those done!

It is crazy to think of it, but end of season is already sneaking up on us.

If you do not have a Kingco time, your last day of the season will be 10/25.
If you are not on the Districts team, your last day of the season will be 11/1 or 11/2 (depending on Kingco finals qualifiers)
If you are not on the State team, your last day of the season will be 11/9.

Team Pictures on Tuesday: The rescheduled team pictures will be on Tuesday afternoon starting at 3:15pm. Please come to the pool in black pants and your maroon team t-shirt.

Parking at Mary Wayte: I have been told that if illegal parking at the pool does not stop, we will not be allowed spectators for the remaining meets this season. Please be sure that you are not parking in the fire lane. Please use the parking lot at Northwood as a first option for practices and meets going forward. Thanks.

Dive Qual Tomorrow at Juanita: Noon warmup; 1:30pm competition starts! Ed will be there to lead the way! Let's go, MI Divers!! We know you are going to crush it!

Practice TODAY 2pm-3:30pm/4pm: Practice today will run from 2pm-3:30pm with 3:30pm-4pm being used to work on starts and turns for those of you who need it. Today's practice is optional. Divers - the board will be open for you to workout today from 2pm-2:45pm at Mary Wayte.

Happy Friday! A few announcements for next week -

On Monday, we will have a Team Meeting at Mary Wayte starting at 3:15pm for all who can attend. If you are unable to attend due to other commitments, I understand and am not asking you to change those. We will conclude the meeting by 3:35pm and start practice for those who do not attend Monday morning at the conclusion of the meeting.

Friday, October 11th, we will have an optional practice from 2pm-3:30pm. We will NOT have morning practice on the 11th. We will run just one, 90 minute workout and from 3:30pm-4pm, we will have an opportunity to work on turns for those looking for extra time working on those.

Big week next week - please be sure that you are hydrating and taking care of your body and mind over the coming days.

Great start to the month of October!! Loved how much we embraced some of the kids in our swimming/diving community today. Thanks to the booster, parents and athletes who made it fun.

Congrats to Clare Watson for picking up a state cut today in the 200 IM and to Alexa McDevitt for picking up a cut in the 100 Breast. Marissa Frame earned today's gold cap! Let's get back to a few days of good training and be ready for two big meets next week.

We are in a good place - even if you feel like your performances are quite where you want them to be, continue to trust that we are heading in the right direction. Let's stay the course.

(PS - check out the program info page if you are interested in seeing where you fall in the depth chart. Remember - only the top four in each event with districts/state times will be on the districts/state team. This is a good time to start looking at where you fall so far. I will do weekly updates on this report for the rest of the season.)

If you're reading this on Monday - go to bed. ;-)

If you're reading this on Tuesday - MEET DAY! Let's GOOOOO! Entries are posted. Remember what I said at the beginning of the season - embrace the lineups that get put together. We have some things to still get checked off the list for this season and this meet is a really great opportunity for that. We will have some kids only doing two or three events since we have a lot of longer heats - just go with it and give your performances the best you've got. Divers, please check with Ed on the confirmed dive lineup for the meet.

The last batch of team suits are done! We will get them passed out tomorrow when you get to the pool. 2:55pm out of class, 3pm warmup. We will also do some fun things tomorrow celebrating our future MI athletes in the crowd! Join us for pizza post-meet and a chance to show our community how incredible being a part of this program really is!

Let's have a great day, Islanders!

TEAM PICTURES TODAY HAVE BEEN CANCELLED. The photographer was unable to make it. Practice as scheduled. :-)

Nice win last night over Lake Washington! Congrats to Gracyn Kehoe (200 IM, 500 Free) and Alexa McDevitt (200 IM) for picking up more state qualifying times for the team at the meet! Gold cap went to Ava Chastain for solid performances all afternoon. Way to go, team!

The ick is starting to circulate. PLEASE be sure you are doing whatever you can to stay healthy. We have had a great first training block and want to keep that energy going into phase 2 of the season. Please be sure you see my statement regarding PE credit below. We have had 24 days of practices and meets so far and many of you have missed more than 1 meet (those are also missed days). Please be sure you are attending practices and meets the same that you would attend science or math class - the school views athletics and classes the same in this regard.

Looking forward to a great afternoon of practice. See you all there!

What a fun weekend in Kennewick!! Really proud of how hard we competed this weekend! Lots of standout performances. Congrats to Clare Capasso for picking up the diving win, Tatum Enge for grabbing another state cut - this time in the 100 breast, and to Emily Dunn for earning the meet's gold cap! After a fun night of bowling....I am glad you all spend your time on the diving board and in pool. Swim lanes > Bowling lanes :-)

For Wednesday's meet at Lake Washington (@ Juanita HS Pool) - out of class is 1:35pm with the bus leaving at 1:45pm! Warmup starts at 2:30pm and the pool closes at 3:20pm. It is a double dual meet - so entries will be very limited. Non-varisty heat athletes should expect just 3 swims this week.

Team Pictures will be Thursday, Sept 26th! For information on ordering, please head to the website:  https://www.thedesignerportraitstudio.com/

PE Credit: Just a reminder that to earn PE credit for participating in Swim/Dive (and any sport at the high school this year) you have to attend 85% of the practices and meets. I did get clarification this week that absences due to sickness, injury, school trips and band do still count against you. An absence is an absence. So not being there and having it excused keeps you out of trouble with me, but doesn't guarantee PE Credit can be earned.

I talked to about half of you yesterday afternoon at practice that are under that % needed currently and will continue talking with athletes on the swim side throughout the week. Divers - Please check in with Ed. If you have missed more than 2-3 practices or meets so far, you are likely not going to have a high enough percentage to earn PE credit as of now and will need to work your way back up.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to be sure your attendance % is high enough for PE credit if you need it. If you miss just one practice a week for swim, your percentage for that week is 80% so LOWER than PE credit minimum level. if you are sick for two or three days, that could set you back 3-4 weeks to get that % back up. Do not wait until Week 9 when its too late and you no longer have a chance to increase your percentages.

If you want know what percentage you are currently at - see me at practice. If you haven't heard from me, you are at 85% or higher.

Results from tonight's win are posted. Congrats to Alexa McDevitt (200 Free, 100 Free) and Gracyn Kehoe (100 Fly, 100 Free) for each picking up two more state qualifying times today! We also were able to get our last relay under the state qualifying mark - the 200 Free Relay. Lots of best times today; it's exciting to see those of you who are working hard in practice get some lifetime bests already! Kaitlyn Eikel earned today's gold cap with best times translating from great workout habits. Great job, Kaitlyn!

As we round out this week with our team trip, let's remember that we are at the end of Week 4 of the season. Kingco falls at the end of Week 10 and our last dual meet of the season at Week 9. Opportunities to get better are still there, but we need to stay healthy! Missing multiple days for injuries and sickness can sometimes be unavoidable even when we are doing our very best to look for ways to minimize those situations as best we can! Please take care of your bodies - inside and out as we continue pushing through this middle portion of the season. We have some huge meets on the horizon and we need everyone feeling their best physically and emotionally.

Kennewick Trip Entries are posted. See you on the bus at noon. Bring lunch with you; we won't be stopping along the way!

Finally, I will be reaching out to some of you next week with updates regarding attendance. We have a fair number of athletes under 85% attendance which means you are at risk of not earning PE credit for this season, if that is of concern to you. Be on the lookout to hear from me if you are well below that line.

For those of you NOT heading to Kennewick with us this weekend, there is no practice on Friday (morning or afternoon).

Lineup for tomorrow is now posted! Out of class at 2:55pm with a 3pm warmup start time! See you all on the deck!

9/17/2024 at 7:52pm:

Great effort today against Curtis! Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get the team win. We really competed well and I am so proud of performances from top to bottom today! Congrats to Gracyn Kehoe for picking up two state cuts today; one in the 200 free and one in the 100 breast. Gracyn was incredibly strong today with her relay swims as well and earned today's gold cap!

Let's get back to practice tomorrow and look to keep improving a little bit each day.

A rarity, but a very tentative heat sheet for tomorrow is ready. Please see here.

I have a lot of changes to this lineup that will be made overnight. Mostly, we have holes in varsity scoring heats/relays that I need to get removed/reworked tomorrow; if you are in a varsity scoring heat - that will likely remain; but your event could change. If you are in a non-varsity scoring heat, I will need to move some folks around so that our scoring heats at least have three athletes in them; you may be placed into a scoring heat. Please come to the meet tomorrow with a team-first mindset and be willing to embrace being flexible so we can try to win this meet.

See you wonderful people tomorrow!

Entries for the Curtis meet are up. Remember, out of class at 1:20pm; bus leaves at 1:30pm; meet starts at 3:30pm and we will be home around 6:30pm. NO WHAMMOS ARE NEEDED FOR EARLY DISMISSAL THIS SEASON.

This is going to be a very competitive meet against the defending 4A State Champs. If you are competing on Tuesday, bring your A game and be prepared to RACE! Every point is going to matter!

For those going to Kennewick - don't forget to get your paperwork turned in via the site link and to get your money paid to the hs on Monday.

Great first week of competition - this is a strong 10 day window for us with intense training and lots of competition for four meets on the schedule. How you respond during this time is going to be a large factor in how your season ends up. Lots of days out of the water with no practice is not the place you want to be. Be sure that you are using your weekend time wisely and getting to workouts! We had a lot of great success on Thursday, but we still have a long way to go to get you all to your goals.

Have a great Sunday afternoon - see you at the pool tomorrow!

Meet results (FINALLY) up! Great job to everyone!! Congrats to Alexa and Tatum on securing state qualifying times during the meet and also to our 200 Medley Relay for punching their ticket to state! For a full meet of great performances, Mira Waingold earned Gold Cap!

Important!! TUESDAY AGAINST CURTIS: If you are NOT planning to participate in the meet at Curtis on Tuesday, please email me by Saturday at 4pm. I have to turn meet entries in on Sunday for this meet. I am going to assume that anyone who has enough practices to participate is going to attend and plan my lineup from there. Please let me know if that is not the case. I will post a names entry list on Saturday am and on Sunday am as well as those who are not attending the meet let me know.

For Tuesday's meet at Curtis: Out of class at 1:20pm; the bus will leave at 1:30pm; meet starts at 3:30pm and we will likely be home between 6:30pm-7pm.

9/11/2024 at 4:38pm: (ENTRIES UPDATED at 9:52pm - be sure to check for changes there were A LOT!)

Meet lineup now posted on the meet schedule and results page. It is your responsibility to double check that you are entered in the meet if you are supposed to me, and that you are not entered in the meet if you are not planning to participate tomorrow. Remember, out of class at 2:55pm, warm up starts at 3:00, diving starts at 3:30, and we are the away team for the meet. Please wear your team suit for this year if you have it. If not, please wear any team suit, or a black suit.

WHOOHOO! Such a great afternoon at the pool. Loved getting to talk through what meets look like and get to spend time as a team on the deck! Thank you to a couple of our alumni (Ella and Rachael!) and to our divers who stayed after their workout to help time for the swimmers today.  Loved the effort coming from the team from start to finish. Really proud of those of you who fought through trying something new today and getting uncomfortable.

Let's get back to practice tomorrow and be ready for some racing next Thursday!

REMINDER: Please complete the Kennewick form ASAP - REQUIRED Link Completion by Friday, Sept 6th (Kennewick and Team T-Shirt) - this is whether you are attending or not!

Great workouts today. I am so proud of you all!

Thank you so much to all of you who attended the athletic code meeting at the school and also for such a great practice to follow! Loved seeing us all truly together for the first time this year.

A few informational pieces from tonight's parent meeting:

Athletes: If you still haven't completed the goal sheet, please do so ASAP - it is PAST DUE! Please don't make me email you to get that form complete.

Another great week of the season in front of us!

Loving the team energy!!

To best help me reach your goals and learn a little more about you, please complete the following link.

https://forms.gle/PMtAuPN5cQ5a4r7w5

This is REQUIRED. You can leave pieces blank if you are unsure, but it is important that you take some time to think about the season and what you want to accomplish. Some of you want to win two events at state, some of you want to letter, some of you want PE credit and there are a million other things that could be your goal for the season. To help us best coach you to your goals, the link will help us get a better understanding of who you are. Thanks for giving this appropriate time to complete.

TEAM SUITS: The first order of team suits will be in at the end of next week. The second order will be in around 3 weeks from now. If you did not order a team suit, please be sure you have a plain black suit or a team suit from a previous year for meets. I will hand out caps next week at Time Trials on Thursday.

Be prepared for a chilly swim tomorrow morning! Lake temperature is cooler than normal. The lake swim does count as a practice! We are almost at the end of week 1 - lets finish strong!

First two days have been GREAT. Proud of you all. Let's keep it up!

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL TOMORROW!
Wednesday am practice is going to be 6:30am-8am tomorrow. We will have bagels for the kids tomorrow as they head to class! Freshmen, you can get out early at 7:30am and head to campus, so you aren't late for the 8am start time. Afternoon practice is 3:30pm-5:30pm.

TEAM SUIT FINAL ORDERS are due Thursday! Be sure to order at this link! This is the FINAL ORDER opportunity for team suits this season. Link: https://djsports.com/teams/mercer-island

If you need help figuring out what size you need, please ask Chauntelle at practice to use the suit sizing kit!

TEAM EXPECTATIONS:

We are talking a lot in practices about expectations. Because there are so many workouts during the week, it is impossible for us to get everyone together at once. I am going to do my best to continue reiterating concepts over and over, but for the sake of repetition - check the website. Later this week, an info link will go live on the website for you to complete. Athletes, you can email me any time to ask questions about your specific situation. Parents, nearly every question you have I will cover during the parent meeting next week on Tuesday evening.

ON THE HORIZON:

Saturday, August 31st: Lake Swim (Clarke Beach to MIBC); 7:45am meet at Clarke Beach; 9:30am pickup at MIBC post-breakfast
(Link for Lake Swim Volunteer Sign-up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0B4EA5AE22AAF58-50413201-miswim)

Loving our 4.0 team GPA already, Islanders! ;-) Let's keep it up!

8/19/2024 at 4:30pm:

ONE MORE WEEK! Whoohoo!!!

A couple of reminders: "Midnight Madness" practice is optional - I understand that not all families/athletes are comfortable with a midnight workout to start the season. Divers are also welcome to join. While we won't have diving during that workout, I will be sure that divers get some pool time that is fun and with the team. Attending or not is an athlete/family decision.

Since I can only count one practice a day towards your attendance limit, coming in the afternoon is totally fine! In past years, we have run doubles at least for one week, but with the season starting one week later than normal and school starting on Wednesday, we really don't have that same start with practices. If you are able to attend more than one practice a day during the first week, I will not turn you away! If you think only making one a day is all you can handle or want to handle - that's great too! After Labor Day, once is a day is fine for the group unless you and I have talked about a different schedule for the fall previously.

Monday and Tuesday afternoon next week at the beginning of practices, we will do an overview of expectations I have for the season including practices, meets and just general team "stuff." Please be on time. For the parents, I will cover all of that during the parent meeting on September 3rd.

It’s time to gear up for the SWIVE season! Your team swimsuit is required and can be ordered directly through DJ Sports. You can place your order using the link below.

There are two order deadlines for suits: August 15th and August 29th. To ensure timely delivery, we strongly encourage everyone to order by August 15th. This is especially important for seniors who need their suits for media days.

If you're unsure of your size, you can try on suits at DJ Sports in Bellevue or we’ll have a sizing kit available at the first practice. You can also find measurement guidelines on the website to help you choose.

Link: https://djsports.com/teams/mercer-island

We’ll have more SWIVE logo gear available to purchase in the next few weeks, but the first priority are the swimsuits.

We’re excited for the upcoming season.

Whole lotta stuff. Read it all, then refer back to it when you need to.

Great job to the seven swimmers who SLAYED at the Kingco Invite today! Loved what I have seen both today and all season from you. You have no more practice requirements and your season has concluded on a very high note! Can't wait to see you cheering the team on the these next few weeks and back in the water with us next season!

For those who have Kingco times, please be sure you complete the link below. If you don't, I will just pick your events. That isn't a bad thing - I will put you in events where I think you will be successful (and - if I am being honest - most of the time, I pick the same events that you would want to swim as well). This is championship swimming now after all! If you filled out the link (there were two people) and didn't complete your NAME on Thursday evening, please redo the link. There were two swimmers who didn't have their name listed.

Divers - Dive qual tomorrow. I BELIEVE IN YOU! Let's get a few more post-season performances qualified this weekend!!! SKO'DivERS!

Monday & Wednesday mornings this week: Only those on the Districts team are permitted to attend. Afternoon open to both District and Kingco team participants. I will have a psych sheet for Kingco available Tuesday afternoon and we will review it at that time. For those not on the District team - welcome to taper time. :-) Expect practices to be light and focused on cleaning up the small things. Districts/State team - yeah. Never back down, never what? ;-)

Parents - Get your BIG HEAD ordered for your athletes by MONDAY! Check your email for important information on this. Open to all athletes on the team.

Just reposting this info from before:

DAY OF EVENT – PARKING

Please communicate with your families/community information about parking during Friday’s preliminaries and Saturday’s finals. Specific information is listed below.

NOW is go time, team. I know that each week I ask you to do more - be tougher - get faster - be better. Its because I know what you are capable of - individually and collectively. We are so good as a unit. Let's rely on each other these next few weeks. Stay healthy. Use your time and energy wisely. Be with people who fill your bucket instead of draining it. Three weeks left. Starts now. Kingco kids - how you perform is the fuel for the District week fire (and Districts feeds State). Your performances are key to the next few weeks. We need you. All in. Full focus. The absolutely best you are capable of.

Post-season Week 1 starts now. Let's do this.

What a great way to celebrate the seniors and end our dual meet season! Piper picked up the last cut needed to earn IronWoman status this year in the 500 free. Gracyn picked up a new state cut in the 50 free. Gold cap went to one of our incredible seniors - Elise McDonald! Proud of everyone today.

Friday afternoon - I am still in need of some help running the meet in the form of timers. :-) If you are available to come by and cheer on our team as we try to get a few more kids into the Kingco meet, come on by! Warmup starts at 3pm - meet will start AROUND 3:30pm. For those participating (list of those who I have earmarked as attending), please send me your events if you don't see any on this sheet ASAP. I will update it in the morning with any emails I get overnight. Meet will conclude before 5:30pm.

All Kingco qualifiers should attend am practice. Lanes will be a little crowded, but it will work out fine in the end. ;-) Here is the link to submit your REQUESTS for Kingco events. The final say on events will come from me, but I am interested in what you are feeling good about swimming for the upcoming championship meet! If I talked with you about events yesterday or today, please still fill this out. Helps me be sure we are both on the same page. If you need to still talk with me about Districts, please shoot me an email and I will figure out when we can have that convo in the coming days. Kingco event choices are the priority for now.

Good team win today vs Holy Names! Isabel Peng picked up a state qualifying time in the 500 free and Maya Torky earned our gold cap! Nice job, everyone!

Seniors - please be sure you complete that link below by 2pm tomorrow for Thursday's meet.

LOTS OF INFO HERE. Please read it all.

NEWPORT RECAP: Good win yesterday. Congrats to Piper (100 Fly, 100 Back) and Gracyn (500 Free) for grabbing a few new state cuts. Both are close to Iron Woman status with state cuts in all events! Good going, you two! Keep it up! No gold cap - let's try again for a full day of INCREDIBLE performances on Tuesday!

TUESDAY MEET: For our meet against Holy Names on Tuesday, let's be sure we do a better job of getting to the pool on time for warmup. Theme for Tuesday's meet is going to be PINK EVERYTHING. We are going to celebrate Breast Health Awareness month and our amazing Coach Jennie and her journey over the past year kicking cancer's butt during Tuesday's meet! Wear Pink to School and bring all your favorite pink items out for our meet!

THURSDAY MEET/SENIOR NIGHT: Next Thursday is Senior Night! Seniors, please complete the following link for info by 2pm on Wednesday, October 18th.  Parents with seniors, please attend the entire meet. We are also going to be giving an opportunity for Juanita to celebrate their seniors on Thursday. My goal is for us to honor the seniors after the 50 free inside during the meet. The past few years, we have done it outdoors after the meet - but that was an adjustment that we made due to covid and then due to the size of the meet. We should be able to do this during the 10-15 minute break.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20th: We are hosting the Kingco Invite for BSD and MI at Mary Wayte on Friday, October 20th. This meet is for anyone who has not qualified for Kingco Champs yet.  All MI athletes without a Kingco time will be entered into this meet. Athletes who have a Kingco time will need to come to morning practice next Friday - NO EXCEPTIONS. Get there. For those athletes who are able in the afternoon, I will need at least 10-12 volunteers to help me with timing and other meet management items.  Please plan to attend if you don't have another afternoon commitment so cheer on our team and support this meet! Every event winner automatically wins a bid into the Kingco meet! This is a great chance for us to get more kids qualified. (Adults: I need 1-2 officials for this meet and could use one person to help with the scoreboard OR the computer. Please email me if you are available.)

For those athletes who do not achieve a Kingco Champs qualifying time by the end of next week, Friday is your last day for the season!

POST SEASON: Just a reminder - our state lineup and districts lineup are the SAME. I can only take FOUR people in each event MAX! This means that you could have a Districts or even State qualifying time and NOT be on the post-season team for us or swimming that event in the post season! I will go over this in the next week, but please look at the top times depth list and take a look at where you fall NOW. You should be able to put together which events you might have a chance to get onto the Districts/State team in by seeing where you sit. My ultimate goal is for us to win a state title - so the lineup is going to be set up for that goal first and foremost based on this season's performances so far. If you are qualified for Kingco, you are expected to compete at Kingco in all sessions you qualify - same for Districts and State if you are placed onto those teams. These are the expectations for all post-season meets for the team.

*For those who swim club year round - times achieved at the post-season meets (Kingco Champs, Districts and State) do cross over into the SWIMS database.

FINAL THOUGHTS: We haven't accomplished our goals yet, team. Please - stay healthy. Use your weekend wisely. MAKE GOOD CHOICES during Homecoming weekend. You reflect our team every single day - that was a choice you made when you decided to be part of the program. Choose to make good decisions and be with friends that do the same. Some of you will have your season end next week, some the week following, some the week after that and some have four weeks left; regardless, we are all one team and I need everyone with us for this final stretch.

TONS of lineup changes for today. I will have new entries list when we get to warmup. Thanks everyone!

PS: I am not a DJ, so requests at this point aren't being taken for lineup changes. Please swim where you are placed. We have two more meets next week.  :-)

Entries LIST is up! Events will get posted tomorrow by 11am. Out of class at 2:55pm. This is a home meet for Newport - so we are following their typical meet management - meaning the meet will start when their coach gets it going. Please get to the pool on time.

Focal points for the upcoming meets will be events that you haven't done yet and for those who are still trying to make a Kingco time, events where I think you have the best chance to qualify.

Proud of you all today. Practice wasn't easy, but you did great. Excited to take on a good Newport team tomorrow.

We will start talking about post-season events next week during practices. Be patient - I will get to all of you by the end of the week to get events worked out and talk about what I see for you over the next few weeks.

Just a reminder: If you don't have a Kingco time, your season will end NEXT WEEK! We are down to the last month of the season, with State Prelims exactly a month from today for the swim and just under a month for dive.

Its really important that you get yourself to as many workouts as possible over the next two weeks with so many limited opportunities for workouts still remaining.  Its also important that you STAY HEALTHY.  Not a lot of the season left - proud of what you all have done so far - let's keep at it!

Yay! Good win yesterday at Lake Washington.  Gracyn picked up two more state cuts in the 200 IM and 100 Breast, and Isabel added a new cut to her list as well in the 200 free! Lots of good performances yesterday that I am proud of.  Great effort from everyone; for some great performances, Nadia Slivinski earned our gold cap! Way to go, Nadia and team!

Still liking what I am seeing so far this season. Next up is our travel trip to the Midwest! Let's continue making practice attendance a priority for the next few weeks. This doesn't mean just being there - this means being dialed in and making sure you are HEALTHY, HYDRATED and FOCUSED when you walk in the door. The number of athletes missing portions of practice because of mismanagement (both of time and body/health) has to decrease.  We have about two weeks before our next home meet in Washington and we are going to grind through some solid training during this period of time.

For those going on the trip, we will do a quick question/answer on Tuesday at 3:15pm. If you aren't able to attend, that's okay. This is an informal place to get organized and answer questions you might have - especially if you have never travelled with a team before.

Have a great Thursday! See (most of you) this afternoon at the pool!

Proud of you, Team! Good job rallying our energy as the meet went. We qualified all three relays today for state! In addition, congrats to Gracyn Kehoe for picking up two state cuts today in the 200 free and in the 100 free. Emma Nowakowski earned today's gold cap! Let's be excited for today and get back to work tomorrow with our meet against Lake Washington.

NO PRACTICE TOMORROW MORNING; just the meet in the afternoon.

We have big goals and today was a step closer. A few things for you all to remember as we look into the last part of the season - we have only six dual meets remaining. If you are not going on the travel trip, you have four meets renaming INCLUDING tomorrow's meet vs Lake Washington. While there are still a lot of meets to go, there are only a few meets to go. ;-) Let's be smart about our opportunities and focus in during these meets! For tomorrow, just a few reminders on timing:

1:20pm Out of Class
1:30pm Bus Leaves PROMPTLY WITHOUT YOU IF YOU AREN'T ON IT; NO YOU CAN'T DRIVE YOURSELF IF YOU MISS THE BUS
2pm Meet Warm Up
2:55pm Meet Start

If you don't turn in your whammo before you leave, you are going to be marked absent and not be able to participate in the meet. PLEASE - this is important - turn it in on your way out or even earlier in the day if your teacher has already signed it.

I am looking forward to a great meet tomorrow and finishing up our week with strong workouts. Let's do this!

Entries are up! We will have space for THREE JV/Non-varsity heat 200 IMs tomorrow. If anyone would like to change out of a JV 50 free or 100 free to swim the 200 IM, please let me know. There will be limited chances for non-scoring swims in this event this season - if you are interested in an event change for tomorrow into this event - email me TONIGHT! :-)

Let's stay classy with how act before, during and after the meet both in person and on social media. I LOVE meet days! See you all tomorrow, Islanders!

9/25/2023 at 12:35pm: Just a quick note regarding attendance in class when it comes to sports participation and grade checks -

To participate in after-school sports or activities, athletes must be in class 60% of the day and not have an unexcused absence (this means even tardies coming up). You cannot attend practice, film, or competition that day. You cannot ride on the bus or watch from the deck. If you come to the meet, you have to watch from the stands. The athletic department is asking coaches to be strict on enforcement of this rule. I get an email from the school daily between 2:50pm and 3:15pm. This isn't enough time for me to get you cleared if you have missed. PLEASE don't end up on this list even inadvertently.

In regards to grade checks, the admin has already reached out to students/coaches who were on probation last spring. We will be doing entire grade checks soon. Get late assignments in and connect with your teachers NOW if there are any concerns or discrepencies in what you are seeing. Being proactive is essential. If you need help with anything academic, please let me know and I will work with you on some solutions to get you on the right track before it becomes a problem that leaves you not able to participate this fall.

___________________________________

9/24/2023 at 5:19pm: We had full attendance on Friday! YAY! Proud of you all for getting to practices and making the team a priority. For next week, the schedule is as follows:

Monday 5:30am-7am OR 3:30pm-5:30pm
Tuesday  Meet vs Bellevue (2:55pm out of class)
Wednesday Meet @ LW (2pm warmup; CONFIRMED 1:20pm out of class and 1:30pm bus departure); NO MORNING PRACTICE
Thursday  3:30pm-5:30pm
Friday 5:30am-7am OR 3:30pm-5:30pm

Please come to FOUR practices this week! If you are at both meets, you only need to come to two additional workouts to hit the requirement! This is the first of three weeks of racing where I have been expectations for the team. This is where I am looking to see lifetime and seasonal bests in addition to getting some additional post-season qualifying times.  So far, so good, but let's turn our good into great!

______________________________

9/21/2023 at 9:02pm: Results from the meet are up! Great job today, team! Lots of great things happening in the pool today for the team; Rachael Yoo earned today's gold cap.  Congrats, everyone!

TOP TIMES: If you check out the Program Info page, you will see our first Top Times report for the season! This will give you a good idea where you are on the team depth chart as we head into the middle portion of our racing.

NEXT WEEK: Keep in mind that next week we have two big meets back-to-back. I will be do some draft lineups over the weekend - if you are not able to attend the meet on Tuesday or Wednesday, please let me know via email as soon as you know. Making some last minute adjustments isn't a big deal - I know things come up. It would be helpful for me to see big picture and know where I might be missing some folks. :-) Good communication is always appreciated!!

FRIDAY PRACTICE: 100% attendance from the team means I will knock off one of the required practice days for everyone on the team (either Thursday or Friday next week) at your choice! Don't let your team down. I have done this a few times and have had ONE kid miss and it ruined the chance for the group to have a day off! Please don't be the one to miss! Let's finish up the week strong! Proud of you all. See you tomorrow!
